Title
Description
This past year has been one of the most challenging years in recent memory. The pandemic has taken a toll, including on children. Adults used their professional skills to help make the year a little better for the kids in our lives: Therapists counseled, entertainers delighted, teachers educated... and Rails developers developed! In this talk, I'll share the apps I built on Rails that helped my kids and me cope, celebrate and persevere through the year. In 2020, tech was pivotal in keeping us going, and for my kids, Rails made the year a little more manageable.

In his talk "Self-Care on Rails" at RailsConf 2021, Ben Greenberg shares personal experiences from the challenging year of 2020 and discusses how Rails developers can use their skills to practice self-care while helping others. The talk stresses the importance of community, ethical responsibility in coding, and the need for self-care amidst the demands of parenting and remote work during the pandemic. Key points include: - **Introduction of the speaker and context**: Ben Greenberg is a Developer Advocate at Orbit and a father living in Israel. The talk centers around mental health and well-being in light of the pandemic. - **Thematic focus**: While the discussion includes some technical aspects, the core focus is on personal experience and anecdotal evidence during a turbulent year. - **Community and ethical obligation**: The speaker highlights the responsibilities developers have to contribute positively to society, referencing various initiatives like Ruby for Good and the Hippocratic License, which emphasizes the need to ensure that code will be used ethically. - **Self-care importance**: The speaker emphasizes that while we help others, we must not forget to take care of ourselves, using the Babylonian Talmud's wisdom to support this idea. - **Anecdotes from personal life**: Ben shares how he leveraged his Rails skills to create solutions for himself and his children, such as a virtual birthday party app that used WebRTC technology to create a celebratory experience despite pandemic restrictions. He described the challenges of parenting during the pandemic and how technology helped mitigate these issues. - **Another example of automation**: Ben also illustrates the automation of health forms for school, using web scraping to ease parental responsibilities in submitting daily health declarations due to new bureaucratic demands. - **Call to action**: He encourages developers to share their solutions and maintain their well-being, fostering an atmosphere of support within the community. The talk is a reminder of the importance of building solutions for personal and communal well-being using our technical skills, especially in times of crisis. Ben Greenberg invites attendees to reflect on their experiences and share resources to aid others in navigating similar challenges.
