Description
Resilience is the ability to function in the face of damage or failure. This is a desirable trait in all of our work, but can be rather difficult to achieve. Let's look outside of our own practices to find inspiration for our own work! In this talk we'll bring examples from outside tech. We’re talking aircraft carriers, race cars, priceless works of art, and hard-fought wisdom from across the accomplishments of humans and even nature itself. Join me in marveling at they ways things keep working, and we’ll get some cool ideas for how to create resilience in your organization or systems.

In this video presentation titled "Surprise! Inspiring Resilience," Cory Watson discusses the concept of resilience, emphasizing its importance in both personal and organizational contexts. Watson explains that resilience is not merely the ability to recover from setbacks, but rather a proactive practice that needs to be cultivated before crises arise. Drawing from various industries outside of technology, he illustrates how organizations can learn from different examples to enhance their own resilience strategies. **Key Points Covered in the Talk:** - **Definition of Resilience:** Resilience is characterized as the ability to function effectively in the face of adversity. It is about perseverance through problems and not merely reacting when incidents occur. - **Proactive Preparation:** Resilience should be a planned and practiced behavior rather than an emergency response. Companies need to prepare for potential failures instead of hoping they won’t happen. - **Importance of Experience:** The ability to manage crises effectively often comes from prior experiences with failure. For instance, mick schumacher's incident during a race illustrates the value of experience and readiness in unexpected scenarios. - **Barriers vs. Resilience:** The talk highlights the difference between creating barriers to prevent mistakes and fostering a resilient mindset that prepares organizations for the unexpected. Barriers are about prevention, while resilience is about adapting and learning from experiences. - **Case Studies and Examples:** - **US Navy:** The 'plane guard' system provides a safety net during aircraft recovery operations on aircraft carriers, showcasing the importance of having backup measures in place. - **NASA Countdown Hold:** The built-in holds in the countdown process allow time for safety checks without jeopardizing the mission, exemplifying prudent planning and flexibility. - **Olympic Planning:** Guidelines from the Olympic Planning Committee emphasize the importance of redundancy in power sources to ensure events go smoothly even during failures. - **Notre Dame Fire Response:** Firefighters successfully utilized pre-planned protocols during the Notre Dame fire, retrieving valuable artworks based on established guidelines, demonstrating the effectiveness of advance planning. - **NTSB Training Using Saved Wreckage:** The NTSB kept the wreckage of TWA Flight 800 for 25 years to train investigators, transforming a tragedy into valuable learning for the future. **Conclusions and Takeaways:** - Organizations must view resilience as a continuous process, requiring ongoing investment in training, preparation, and learning. - By anticipating possible failures and synchronizing efforts across various teams, companies can create a more responsive and adaptable workplace culture. - Ultimately, resilience is described as a verb—an active, ongoing practice—where organizations must continuously develop strategies to manage and learn from both success and failure.
