Did you know that Shakespeare wrote almost no direction into his plays? No fight direction. No staging. No notes to the songs. Of the 1700 words he created, there was no official dictionary. That’s right the author of some of the greatest literary works in history, which were filled with situational complexity, fight sequences and music, include NO documentation! How did he do it?

In this talk, we’re going “thee and thou.” I’m going to give you a crash course in how: Shakespeare writes software.

I have some help with the Chinese translation, so if any of these are wrong, blame me, not Mark, entirely. I, in fact, have no idea what that says; it could say anything and I'd be like, 'Yeah, totally!' My objective today is simple: to bring joy to you. That's what this talk is ultimately about—joy. When I decided long ago to become an engineer, I'll actually take a step back. I started as a professional actor and I have a degree in acting. I didn’t take a single class in any form of computer science or computer engineering. So all the talks about education and so forth totally resonate with me because I actually have a degree in theatre.

But here's the thing I learned: everything we do in life is meant to create an experience for someone or something else. So today, I'm going to create an experience that brings you joy. Fair enough? Very good. You see, the thing is we have people in our lives that we care very deeply about. There are friends and acquaintances, some of whom are our Ruby friends. Some are random people we meet in Times Square whose names we don’t know, and then there are the people we meet here today. These are our Ruby friends, the ones I’m going to bring joy to today.
00:02:21.500 And then there are very important, very special people in our lives. If you notice at the back of the room, the lady in this photo is my wife, right there, who came with me. Yep, she’s a sucker! Then there’s this—of course, I am that guy. If you didn’t realize it, I dated a children’s theatre, and that’s my wife right there, Julia. We met doing theater. This show isn’t specifically what we met doing, but anyway, as a professional actor, I had the great opportunity of playing the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz.
00:02:54.040 To give a little background: that role involved a head-to-toe polyester bodysuit with full makeup, done outdoors in the middle of summer. The temperature was, on average, 95 degrees outside. Sorry, I don't know what that translates to in Celsius, but it's probably really high up there—very, very hot! In fact, I would sweat so heavily that I literally soaked through the costume entirely. They could wring the costume out and it would drip with sweat. It got so sweaty that the next night, it would still be wet—quite disgusting. Now again, many things bring joy to our lives: the relationships we have and the people around us. So, I just want to hear from all of you. Who has people in your life that bring joy? Say 'aye.' Aye! How about sunshine or suffering? Enjoy!

00:04:56.090 Documentation sucks for a multitude of reasons. The first is it's rarely up to date. There's little or no incentive to write it, and there's never enough. For me, here's a graph that diagrams my love and hate of documentation: on the bottom is the time spent writing docs and on the right, it's how much I want to punch someone. What you’ll see is, the more time I spend writing docs, I start off happy but kind of get a little sad by the end. I’m pretty much ready to rage quit and punch you in the face! But interestingly enough, as it goes on, I actually find that the more time I spend on it, the more fulfilling it becomes. I end up becoming pretty neutral about it.
00:10:41.240 See, here’s the thing: when we look at the code in front of us, the narrative there is the implementation—that’s the thing we spend a lot of our time doing. What we’re supposed to be doing, right? We come up with naming conventions and so forth about that. Then there’s this chunk up there, which generally is where the documentation goes, and this is the 'how.' How am I supposed to be doing this? The thing is, the 'what' takes a lot of time, and the 'how' takes a lot of time, but we’re generally okay with doing a lot of the 'what.' Yet the 'how' is a total pain in the ass, right? We absolutely hate doing the 'how.' That’s because documentation sucks; it’s a hard thing to do.
00:12:29.290 Now, changing topics just a little bit, let’s talk about this—language is powerful. It's incredibly powerful. We know this intimately because, and I know this intimately because I'm from America. I came over here into your beautiful country; I'm speaking one language and you're speaking another for most of you, and we find a common bond in the middle. Language is incredibly powerful, and so is documentation. Documentation is really powerful, but it’s also quite painful. Now, in the middle, there’s this thing called poetry. What is that? Well, it’s an interesting hybrid of the two if you think about it. Poetry is the expression of feeling or emotion through language. In a way, it’s like poetry is documented language; it’s very declarative by nature.
00:17:28.410 Well, I don’t know if you remember this, but a few years ago, there was a man by the name of David Heinemeier Hansson. Do not know who this is? It’s okay! Some wanted to burn their computer and throw things at him as a result. So why would that be so concerning? Why would so many people care about that? Let’s examine this systematically. I went online and looked up the definition of a writer. It said, 'A person who has written a particular text.' Yes, very clear. That is exactly what we do. But there’s nothing sexy about that. I mean, there’s nothing enjoyable about simply writing. There are much better words. And then looking at synonyms, we see words like 'author,' or 'wordsmith,' or 'penman'; now we’re getting somewhere—novelist! Oh, and I noticed this little word there: 'poet.' I thought, 'Heck yeah! I like poet!' I looked up the definition, and it says, 'Somebody with magical powers.' I was like, 'Yeah! I want magical powers! I'm now a software poet! This is amazing!' I finally determined what it is that I love.
00:19:28.620 So, it wasn’t a matter of not being a software writer; it was the wrong word choice. Language is powerful! As I dove down this rabbit hole a little further, I wanted to look at some great poets. Let’s define this a little. I found this guy, Mr. William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was one of the greatest poets of our time. In fact, if you do a little bit of research into him, you’ll notice that this book here is the complete works of Shakespeare. Now I didn't get a chance to bring that because I would have to check another bag, and it would go over the limited prize; it would probably cost me $75 to bring it to you today.
00:21:16.300 When you look at it, you’ll notice that of Shakespeare's language, there are 800,000 words. Now, of those 800,000 words, I want you to guess how many new word forms he created. Out of the air! Never been used before. How many do you think? A thousand? 200? None? No—1700! Now, of 800,000 words, Shakespeare, the poet, created 1700 new word forms, things that had never been used to reference something else before. It’s not that he just created words out of thin air, but he used poetry; he expressed these ideas.

So basically, what he did was create an application of 800,000 lines, and he didn’t document any of it.
