Title
Description
Liam McNally Ever thought about being a remote worker, or what it is really like to work remote, the no nonsense version. This talk will explore why being a remote worker is amazing, why sometimes it isn’t and why for some people it’s not for them. How do you identify who will be strong remote workers at recruitment? How to build a culture centred around remote working and how to get it to scale from 100 people to 1000 people and beyond. Close to 10 years experience working in HR and Talent Acquisition and the last 3 years working and scaling remote businesses. I have worked in tech environments for the last 5 years and have become a huge advocate for remote working as a way of building and teams/businesses. In this presentation at RubyConf AU 2020, Liam McNally, recruiting manager at GitLab, shares insights on remote work, exploring both its advantages and challenges. As a professional with over ten years in HR and talent acquisition, and significant experience in scaling remote teams, he discusses crucial aspects for both employees and organizations considering remote work. Key Points: - **Flexibility**: Remote work allows employees to work from various locations and choose their working hours, leading to a more tailored lifestyle. However, it’s important to establish routines to prevent burnout. - **Results vs. Time Focus**: Remote work shifts the focus from hours worked to results achieved, enabling a performance-driven environment. - **No Commute**: Eliminating commutes reduces stress and contributes positively to the environment. - **Social Interaction**: Working remotely can lead to feelings of loneliness; thus, it’s essential to integrate social activities through co-working spaces or group exercises. - **Communication Challenges**: Time zone differences can complicate decision-making and responsiveness. However, diverse perspectives during these processes can enhance solutions. - **Onboarding**: New employees may be overwhelmed with documentation; structured onboarding resources can ease this process and ensure clarity. - **Scalability of Remote Work**: Establishing consistent processes is vital when scaling remote work environments. Emphasizing documentation and clear communication helps maintain efficiency. - **Diversity and Inclusion**: Remote work fosters inclusivity in recruiting, enabling diverse teams that drive innovation. - **Cost Savings**: Companies can save on physical office expenses, reallocating funds to employee benefits and enhancing satisfaction. - **Work-Life Balance**: Reduced commute time allows for improved personal time, leading to higher employee retention and satisfaction. In conclusion, while the appeal of remote work is strong, it is essential for potential remote employees to carefully consider both the benefits and drawbacks. Organizations must weigh the implications of maintaining physical offices against the advantages offered by remote work dynamics. For further information, GitLab offers additional resources on their remote work practices.
