Good afternoon! It's nice to see you both. There's Ramón on that screen right over there. Hello, I'm Arnaud, in case you didn't know. Hey everybody, welcome on this wonderful Friday afternoon! It's fantastic to see so many people tuning in right now. Welcome! Grab a drink; we have ours. Feel free to grab some snacks!
00:00:39.680
In Holland, we have this thing called a 'freemibo.' Have you heard of that, Ramón? No, not until now! Okay, so a freemibo is an abbreviation for 'Friday afternoon drinks,' which literally translates to that. I think many Dutch people are probably enjoying their own drinks and snacks while watching.
00:01:07.520
Can we already see who's tuning in? Yes, we've got about 300 folks so far tuned in to watch us! I'm curious where they're from, though. Why don't you send us an emoji in the YouTube chat? Maybe an emoji of the flag from where you are right now? I'll put mine in; I'm in Austria at the moment. I've already seen someone mention they're tuning in from Shetland, and hello to Sheffield! Wonderful to see everyone joining us!
00:01:33.840
The Netherlands is well represented, as well as folks from India and even someone from Chile! ¡Buena tardes, buena villas! Wow, you're tuning in from everywhere! Would you like to tell us a bit about our event and how it started?
00:02:02.000
Totally! As many of you know, several events this year have been canceled or postponed. This wonderful group of people here, from left to right: Floor, Tom, Arnaud, and Raita, are the folks that brought us Euroko 2019 in Rotterdam. If you were there, you might remember we were sailing the high seas—no boat puns for today, unfortunately. These four believed there was a bit of a Ruby-shaped hole in our hearts due to the quietness in Ruby land regarding conferences.
00:02:49.680
In a very quick time, they thought: wouldn't it be wonderful to have an online event where we could bring together so many wonderful speakers and organizers from around the world to celebrate this beloved programming language? With that said, welcome, and thank you for joining us today for NoRuKo! We're excited to bring this event to you and share the voices of those who have kindly agreed to give presentations today.
00:03:15.840
I’ll give you a quick tour of what you can expect today from us. We have two tracks: the main track and the community track. For the community track, emceeing will be headed up by Arnaud. Can you give us a little wave, Arnaud? I'll be your MC for the main track, but you can also potentially see me from time to time since I'll be presenting to you from this area.
00:03:37.440
As for the community track, you'll be seeing a bit more of Raita because we can see each other. It's essential to showcase both sides at the same time. Now, on our main track, we'll have presentations from Mats, Penelope, Tatiana, Tom, Allison, Yulik, and Kirk. You can also expect musical interludes, and I'll give you more details on that later.
00:04:02.400
Before the community track starts at four o'clock, we'll be having our presentation from Mats. Once that presentation ends, feel free to head over to the community track, which will be led by Phil, Ali, Victor, and Sean. We're very excited to be able to show this to you today!
00:04:43.760
Now, what’s this about a musical intermezzo? Well, let me tell you! This is the NoRuKo musical intermezzo, brought to you by Half-Bite and Nerd Disco. We're thrilled to include this in our programming for you today. As I mentioned, there will be two broadcasts on YouTube: the main track, which you're watching now, and the community track. You'll find the link to the community track on noruko.org.
00:05:23.280
Please note that you have access to a YouTube live chat where you can contribute. We welcome you to ask questions, engage in conversation, and have fun! This is very important to us. We will also be monitoring the NoRuKo hashtag—#NoRuKo. Don't hesitate to tweet at #RB.
00:06:00.720
Lastly, before I hand it over to Raita, there will be live captions provided by White Code Captioning. You can find those by clicking the closed captioning button on your screen. If you have any difficulties, there will also be a stream text link shared in the YouTube chat below.
00:06:29.440
With that said, I think I’ve covered enough about the technical side of this conference. Let’s head over to Raita, who will tell us more about the community side.
00:06:45.040
Thank you, Ramón. By tuning in, you agree to abide by our code of conduct. On this slide, you can find the link to our code of conduct, as well as the contact information for our code of conduct team. You'll see their Twitter handles and Telegram handles displayed. Please contact them if necessary.
00:07:05.680
Please remember that any participant who breaks our code of conduct in the chat will unfortunately be banned from contributing further. Now, about the venue: Ramón, can you tell us a bit about that?
00:07:28.640
We’ve got a very special venue for you this year. It might look a little different depending on where you are, but this is an artist's rendition of what we believe the venue will look like for you. You'll have a space where you can listen to these incredible talks today, plus a bathroom if you don’t know where that is—I recommend consulting those around you.
00:08:20.640
Feel free to grab snacks and drinks from your kitchen! Speaking of snacks and drinks, during our break, the core team will be enjoying a bite of pizza. We invite you to time your pizza delivery with that break and maybe join us for a slice!
00:09:09.360
Now, while I’ve shown you what your venue will look like, let me mention our venue for the core team. It’s crucial for us to demonstrate that we are taking proper safety precautions. The core team is physically together, but they are maintaining proper distance and wearing protective gear where necessary. They’re currently at Fullstaq’s office—our center of operations.
00:09:55.360
We would like to extend our gratitude to Fullstaq for providing the center of operations, and to AppSignal for providing us with the closed captioning. That’s what will be happening throughout the day, but what about after the conference?
00:10:38.720
After the conference, we’ll have Ruby karaoke! So feel free to use any props you have at hand—a hairbrush as a microphone or maybe a hat or a shawl! In the chat, you’ll find a link to a Google form where you can submit your song selection. We’ll review the song to ensure it adheres to our code of conduct.
00:11:06.000
To make this work, you’ll need to participate first. You sing a song and then join others in applauding as they sing their hearts out. Just a reminder: this is not going to be recorded, so you can sing freely and have fun!
00:11:54.720
Speaking of what the future holds, we’d like to give a quick shoutout to what's coming next year. You might have noticed that Euroko 2020 was supposed to take place today, but it has not been fully canceled. Instead, Euroko in Finland will occur in May next year, and we are looking forward to seeing you there!
00:12:34.240
They’ve opened a little store where you can pick up some swag like masks, stickers, and even a Euroko pillow that is definitely not going to put me to sleep. With that said, I think you’ve heard enough from us for now. Let’s go ahead and dive into the incredible talks we have lined up for you!
00:12:56.880
Raita, why don’t you tell us who we have first? Okay, he needs little introduction as the creator of Ruby. He’s been working on Ruby for more than 25 years, but even he sometimes faces challenges with technology. You’ll find out later because he sent us his recorded talk and faced a few hurdles.
00:13:35.360
After his stream, we will open a Q&A session with him, so please ask your questions in our chat. We’ll make sure to address them when he joins us. He will show us what's coming with the release of Ruby 3 and also share insights about Ruby's future.
00:13:55.840
So, Mats, take it away!
